Yamaha
brass instruments
We produce the highest
quality band instruments in the world but we were not particularly
sophisticated when it came to using software to monitor their
assembly. We feared a misstep would reduce our inventory at the
price of our delivery performance. We sought a scaleable system
one that would allow us to start with a few fundamental controls and
expand as our knowledge ... grew.
The Windows
platform of WinMAGI really made our jobs easier both in
functionality and performance.

The
product is a 3D-display system. It
displays graphical images into a 180-degree field of view. The
user sits halfway into a hemispherical dome and the surrounding
image provides the immersive sensation of being part of the scene
being projected. It can be used for simulation training applications. The
military uses it for various kinds of flight simulation and combat
trainingthe uses are restricted only by the users
imagination.
"I
was structuring the manufacturing process into a make-to-stock
environment so we needed a powerful forecasting/master production
scheduling function. Shipping
from stock would provide the customer with a short leadtime but I
also wanted a fairly short manufacturing leadtime to replenish the
stocking levels. This
meant we needed to stock long leadtime components. So
we needed a powerful inventory management function to compliment the
forecasting/MPS capability. Our
other requirements purchasing, sales order entry, MRP,
engineering, and scheduling were nothing extraordinary from a
systems perspective. But
most importantly, the system had to be affordable and from a company
we could trust. I had worked with big, mainframe software packages
selling for hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars,
requiring battalions of consultants and leagues of resources to
maintain and manage the data. Elumens could not even afford the training costs for a package
like that. Besides,
such software is an anachronism; a throwback to the days of big
mainframe computers and big MIS staffs. Ive
been doing this sort of thing for a few decades and know that todays
PC networks are more powerful than mainframes were just a few years
ago. I know of nothing that an expensive mainframe system can do
that a modestly priced PC network system cannot do except
guarantee full employment for consultants and IT professionals
unwilling to let go of the old ways.
Of course, not all PC based ERP systems are equal. I
could not afford a false step that could throw the company into
chaos. Chaos costs money. When
your company does not have deep pockets, the window of opportunity
for profit will slam shut quickly unless systems come up chaos free. My
solution was WinMAGI software by MAGI. "

"We still have over 100,000 parts in the database and many
thousands may have a requirement at any given time. We are
fortunate that, even with this many part numbers to process, WinMAGIs
MRP runs in about thirty minutes a day. We order purchased
components on time now the expensive expediting has been
eliminated except when human error causes chaos. But that will
always happen and WinMAGI helps us react to it. The pre-WinMAGI
days seem like a lifetime ago."
Plastic
Molder Gets a Handle on Operations with WinMAGI
Several years ago they purchased a software package developed
exclusively for the plastics molding industry. They
were not able to make the software work.
The vendors people spent so much time at the
factory that a separate work area had to be set up for them. The automotive industry is unforgiving of late shipments and the
company was getting too largeand the product line too complexto
manage without software.
They began looking for a replacement.
They discovered that, even though WinMAGI was not developed
exclusively for the plastic molding industry, it had more
plastic molding features than their old software.
Both packages expressed material requirements
in tiny fractions. Both
accommodated flash, runners, and regrind.
And both could report scrap by mold.
But only WinMAGI could report scrap by cavity
within the mold and explain
to factory people why that is important.
WinMAGI performed all
the functions that the
earlier software promised to perform but could not.
And it was stable. After the initial training of a few key employees, inventory
was brought under control.
